The Winner: Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
We’ll start off by establishing that a burr coffee grinder produces a finer grind than a blade coffee grinder.

Despite that being said, cold brew requires a different grind size from French press to achieve its particular taste and aroma. The Encore has 40 preset adjustment steps to produce grinds for any brewing method.
The Encore produces consistent grinds that are fine enough for most espresso machines, and we didn’t have a problem with the fine grind falling through the filter. It grinds fast, producing nearly 70 grams of ground coffee after 30 seconds.
What we love most about the Encore is how user-friendly it is. It features a single on-off knob without any timer or weight indicator. Though you don’t have a hands-off operation or a way to fix the amount of ground coffee needed, there’s no learning curve.
Most coffee grinder reviews praise the Encore for being a small, well-designed machine that can sit out on the countertop without taking too much space.
Our test showed that this grinder is easy to clean and maintain but requires frequent tune-ups as burr misaligns after a while due to Encore’s lightweight build.
Considering it’s the cheapest out of all the equally well-performed machines in our research, the Encore is the best burr grinder we’d recommend to any coffee lover.
The Professional’s Pick: Baratza Virtuoso Plus
90% of the professional baristas we talked to said they’d recommend the Virtuoso to anyone looking for an upgrade.
Baratza Virtuoso Plus has a sleek all-metal casting with a sturdy base. Compared to the Encore’s simple matte-black finish, the Virtuoso has a more modern design. More importantly, its extra 1.2-lbs provide a solid build that requires less calibration down the road.
Performance-wise, the Virtuoso Plus produces consistently fine grind. You can have the same amount of freshly ground coffee every morning by setting the precise digital timer.
But the operation is confusing. How much you want to put on or off the timer depends on the knob-turning direction. And the increment is different. Though not a deal-breaker, there’s a learning curve.
If you like Encore’s conical bin, the Virtuoso Plus retains the shape but swaps the opaque plastics for a clear look. The same goes for the ground bin, to which a LED back-lit system is added, so you can see the ground coffee’s amount.
The Virtuoso Plus works faster with more functions and features compared to the Encore. We think those alone don’t justify paying $100 more for a comparable job grinding coffee beans.
But if you have the budget, The Virtuoso Plus is a high-quality coffee grinder worth investing in.
Our Verdict
So which coffee grinder is on your radar? If you’re into making the perfect cup of coffee, we’d recommend the Baratza Encore.
